How the screen time saved calculator works

Two numbers do all the work. Your current daily phone time minus your target daily phone time gives the hours you free up each day. Multiply that by the timeframe and you get the total. With the defaults, 4.6 hours down to 3.0 hours is 1.6 hours a day, and over 75 days that is 120 hours, or 5.0 full 24-hour days.

The target field is the part almost every other screen time calculator skips. Most of them take one number, project it across your remaining lifetime, and hand back a scary total you cannot act on. A reduction is a delta, so the tool needs a before and an after. That is also why the timeframe chips stop at a year: a digital detox is a finite window you can actually finish, not a lifetime projection.

The input is phone time only, not all-device screen time. That matches what your phone already reports, and it keeps the result honest, since a work laptop is not something a detox can cut. On iPhone, read the weekly average from Settings, then Screen Time. On Android, use Settings, then Digital Wellbeing and parental controls. Weekly averages beat a single day, because weekends usually run higher than weekdays.

Where every conversion number comes from

Competitors round these to "about 5 hours a book" and leave it there. Every constant below comes with its arithmetic and its source.

Active minutes per week150 minLower bound of the WHO 2020 guideline: adults should get at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week.
Waking hours per day16 h24 hours minus 8 hours of sleep, the midpoint of the 7 to 9 hour adult range. The CDC advises adults aged 18 to 60 to get at least 7 hours a night.

Each entry is converted to whole minutes first, and every tile is derived from that one figure, so the numbers never stack one rounding on top of another. Books show a whole number once the total passes 10 and one decimal place below that. Workouts and meditation sessions round down, because a partial session is not a session. These are population averages, so treat them as a scale for the hours rather than a forecast of what you personally will do.

Turning saved hours into a digital detox that sticks

Pick a target you would actually keep. A drop from 4.6 to 3.0 hours holds for months; a drop to 30 minutes usually collapses in a week and takes the habit with it. Move the phone charger out of the bedroom and set a hard cutoff on social apps in the evening. Then give the reclaimed slot a job before it arrives, because an empty hour gets filled by the same apps you just cut.

That last part is the one people skip. If the plan is only "use my phone less", the hours drift. If the plan is "read for 40 minutes after dinner", the hours have somewhere to go. The Glow Within tracker already pairs a "No Social Media After 9pm" task with reading, journaling, and meditation, so the cut and the replacement live on the same checklist. The habit streak calculator puts a number on the streak. The reading tracker catches the books equivalence, and the annual workout minutes calculator does the same for training time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about screen time saved calculator

How much time do you save by cutting one hour of phone time a day?

One hour a day is 30 hours over 30 days, 75 hours over a 75-day challenge, and 365 hours over a year. That last one is just over 15 full 24-hour days. Count only the hours you are awake and it lands nearer 23 days, on a 16-hour waking day. Either way, one hour is 6.25% of the time you are awake.

What is the average daily screen time?

DataReportal puts global average phone use at about 4 hours 37 minutes a day. Across all devices, the US average is roughly 6 hours 12 minutes, because laptop and TV time stack on top of the phone. This calculator asks for phone time only, since that is the part of the day a digital detox can realistically change.

How do I check my actual daily phone time?

On iPhone, open Settings, then Screen Time, then See All App and Website Activity for a daily and weekly average. On Android, open Settings, then Digital Wellbeing and parental controls. Use the weekly average rather than a single day, because weekends usually run higher than weekdays.

Is 4 hours of phone time a day too much?

No health body publishes an official adult limit, so "too much" comes down to what the time displaces. Research links five or more hours of daily leisure screen time to worse sleep and mood outcomes, and Georgetown University reports that people who cut back see better focus, sleep, and mental health. Four hours sits close to the global average. That makes it typical. It does not make it healthy.

Where do the book, workout, and meditation equivalents come from?

Books use 68,000 words as an average trade book length and 238 words per minute as the adult silent reading rate for non-fiction, taken from a 2019 Brysbaert meta-analysis of 190 studies. That works out to 4.8 hours a book. Workouts use 45 minutes and meditation sessions use 10 minutes, which are the task targets built into Reset75. The activity figure uses the WHO recommendation of at least 150 moderate-intensity minutes a week. Pair the output with the reading tracker or the annual workout minutes calculator to see where the hours land.

How is "percent of your waking day" calculated?

It is your daily hours saved divided by 16, then converted to a percentage. The 16 comes from a 24-hour day minus 8 hours of sleep, the midpoint of the 7 to 9 hour adult range, with the CDC advising adults aged 18 to 60 to get at least 7 hours a night. If you sleep 7 hours, divide by 17 instead and the percentage drops slightly.

Why does the calculator default to 75 days?

75 days is long enough for a screen habit to change rather than pause, and it matches the 75-day challenge format. Pick 30 days for a shorter kickstart window, or 1 year to see the full annual figure. The chips move the headline and all four equivalence tiles at once. Once you have a target, the habit streak calculator counts the streak behind it.

Does this calculator store my data?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser, and your inputs are kept in local storage on your own device so the page remembers them next visit. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing your browser data or pressing Reset wipes it.
