75 Hard is a 75-day mental toughness challenge created by Andy Frisella. You follow five strict daily tasks for 75 consecutive days. Miss one, and you start over from Day 1.
75 Hard rules
Every day for 75 consecutive days, you must complete all five tasks:
- Two 45-minute workouts — one must be outdoors, regardless of weather
- Follow a diet — your choice, but no alcohol and no cheat meals
- Drink a gallon of water — that's 3.8 liters, or roughly 128 ounces
- Read 10 pages of a non-fiction or self-improvement book (no audiobooks)
- Take a progress photo — every single day
There are no substitutions, no rest days, and no exceptions. If you miss any task, you restart from Day 1.
Key milestones to watch for
Not all days hit the same. Research on habit formation points to a few critical thresholds:
- Day 21 — the point where early research suggested habits begin to form. You'll notice the routine getting easier.
- Day 30 — one month in. Most people who make it this far finish the challenge.
- Day 66 — a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that it takes an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic.
- Day 75 — you're done. The discipline you've built is the real result.
75 Hard vs 75 Soft
75 Soft is a more approachable version: one workout per day (45 minutes, no outdoor requirement), a flexible diet with one cheat meal per week, and no restart penalty for missed days. If you want the structure without the all-or-nothing pressure, it's worth considering. Read our full comparison of 75 Hard vs 75 Soft.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start 75 Hard on any day?
Yes. There's no official start date — pick any day that works for you. Use the calculator above to see exactly when you'll finish based on your chosen start date.
What happens if I miss a day on 75 Hard?
In the original 75 Hard program, you restart from Day 1. There are no exceptions — that's the core of the challenge. If you want more flexibility, consider 75 Soft instead.
How long is the 75 Hard challenge?
Exactly 75 consecutive days. That's roughly 10 weeks and 5 days. Use the calculator to see your exact end date and which milestones fall on which days.
Do both workouts have to be 45 minutes?
Yes. You need two separate 45-minute workouts each day, and at least one must be outdoors — regardless of weather.
Can I do 75 Soft instead?
75 Soft is a more forgiving version — one workout per day, flexible diet with one cheat meal per week, and no restart penalty. See how they compare.
Does 75 Hard actually work?
The structure works because it forces consistency. Research shows it takes around 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic, and 75 Hard pushes past that threshold. Most people who finish say the discipline carries over long after the challenge ends.
Can I drink alcohol on 75 Hard?
No. Alcohol is not allowed during 75 Hard, regardless of your chosen diet. This is one of the non-negotiable rules of the program.
